It happened! all the rumors were true! Apple have announced the release of the ipad.

You don’t get a better launch than what happened with this Ipad. Forums have been flooded with rumors of an “itablet” that would be released in the market. After all the hype, Steve Jobs made an amazing keynote that put all the rumors to bed and the social networks went ipad crazy.

Below I take a look at its impact in twitter and the tone of the comments that was appearing.

Social Media Impact

With the announcement of the ipad, twitter went through the roof, below is a graph of how many twitter posts there was that mentioned the word “ipad”. It certainly was one of the highest trending keywords that twitter has seen in a while.

Social Media Tone:

The percentage of tweets that occurred in the above showed that majority of tweeps thought that the ipad lacked in certain features.

Only +/- 11% of users had positive things to say about the ipad.

So what do users think is lacking?

- Majority of users feel that because there is no camera on board, this is a major oversight.

- One thing we all cant stand about our iphones is that you cant have 2 applications open at once. This is no different on the ipad. I mean seriously, i cant have my email open at the same time as taking notes?

If you are interested in watching the keynote on the Apple website or you would like to watch the introduction video.

I was honoured to be featured in the Financial Review this weekend, it really outlined and recognised the amount of work we have been doing for our clients.

aa

Here is a small snippet from the article:

{Social media expert, Steve Smorgon, has 11,800 followers and follows 13,000 other users and that ratio alone identifies him among the professional or business users of Twitter.

”I tend to follow people that follow me, mainly because I wasn’t into the routine of sorting when I started but also because it¹s an etiquette thing users expect you to follow them back”

As an advisor to companies on how to penetrate social media sites, Smorgon is acutely aware of both the manners that he adopts in the networking sphere and the sensitivity that business should show to users.

The engagement with social media, he says, “it has to be relaxed, it has to be conversational because, remember, you’re pushing yourself into a conversation that’s already going on”

”It might be a marketing tool but it’s more for commentary and some businesses don’t get this. The best way for business to approach it is to develop a relationship with people who are talking about them already”

Smorgon describes Twitter as more of a public space than Facebook and less of a professional space than Linkedin but, he adds, it’s effective as a professional networking vehicle.

“I’ve discovered borders don’t have boundaries. I’ve expanded my network to social media contacts in the U.S. that I might never have heard and I’ve picked up a few speaking engagements that might not have come my way”,  he says.

Like most longer-term users, Smorgon is getting savvier about his participation. He has different accounts for friends, business and social media and is using a monitoring tool to improve his participation in the Twitterverse.}

We are currently doing some work on drummond golf and tweeting the masters. It is the first time that Tiger Woods is playing on a circut in Australia and we were very excited about it. Playing golf ourselves, we thought that while we were stuck in the office how would we find out about the masters? and live results?

Sure, I could go to the home page of some opinionated sports website, but I wanted to be right in the action!

Our agency Mercury approached drummond golf about tweeting Tiger Woods every move, we wanted to follow him round llike jack rabbits and tweet everything he did, like everything!

Only joking, but we will be tweeting all the results, perhaps some commentary from Brett Ogle and some competitions.

This is a current snapshot in the middle of Nov

drummond

We also asked them to integrate it on their website, shown here

I saw this in the paper and thought, how interesting, drummond golf are ahead of the pack.

news.

So if you love golf and want to know whats happening at the golf masters, follow @drummondgolf

As a social experiment, we decided to create a Slurpee fanpage on Facebook. The goal was to generate as many fans as we could and more importantly keep them. ‘

After 8 months we have reached 545,501 fans. We started working with 7-eleven USA on their social strategy and how we could help them achieve their social media goals. We then sold the fanpage to them and learnt alot about the process. At one stage we were able to generate over 45,000 a day!!

The graph below shows how we were able to generate 45,000 NEW fans per day.

For the last week i have been checking out Klout, an online application that tracks your influence across social networks…

from their website

“Klout allows you to track the impact of your opinions, links and recommendations across your social graph. We collect data about the content you create, how people interact with that content and the size and composition of your network. From there, we analyze the data to find indicators of influence and then provide you with innovative tools to interact with and interpret the data.”

I decided to run my profile on twitter to see what the results where and how more importantly I could improve.

The Results:

FlockScreenSnapz001

They rank you out of 100 and against the following factors

- Firstly, whether you are a Connector, Persona, Casual, or climber

- Who are people that are influenced by you, and who you might be influenced by!

PreviewScreenSnapz002

The above statistics will tell you where you need to improve to increase your score, these are done by Engagement, Reach, Velocity, Demand, Network Strength and Activity.

I recommend that you check it out, certainly has some handy stats and the ability to compare yours against others..

The recession slows, but does not stop, online ad growth.
As strange as it may sound, the economic downturn may speed up the transition to digital advertising for many marketers.
The Internet’s share of total media ad spending is rising by at least 1 percentage point every year. Simply put: Marketers are spending more on Internet ads, while spending less on advertising in other media, such as newspapers, radio and magazines.
Furthermore, eMarketer projects that the online share of ad dollars will continue to grow, rising from nearly 10% this year to slightly more than 15% in 2013.

Social micro-payments enabler Tipjoy is releasing an APItoday that allows charities but also companies and individuals to handle relatively small payments from within their applications and spread the word through Twitter. This opens up a lot of opportunities for application developers who might benefit from small transactions, from e-commerce services selling content, subscriptions, etc. to charitable causes and non-profits accepting small donations online to peer-to-peer payments between individuals.

Inserting payments made through Tipjoy into your Twitter stream can be an invaluable way to spread the message about what it is you’re buying or donating to, much like sharing your activities, digital media you like and applications you use can spread virally through social networking sites like Facebook. With the Twitter Payments API, developers now have an easy way to integrate payment handling into third-party Twitter applications and potentially benefit from the network effect for all the people who use their service.

There are a few basic ways to waste money on advertising:
Spending too much. [In reality, this almost never happens, despite the CFO's suspicions.]

Spending too little. This actually happens a lot. Several polls have shown that at least one-third of marketing managers believe their resources are insufficient to meet their agreed-upon goals. Fifty GRPs is the minimum level to reach the target once a week.

David Allen talks about ways you can make Facebook and Twitter work for you on the job

These days I’m asked frequently about the role of social media in personal and organizational productivity. The question is timely, as the major social media applications have millions of users and are still growing fast. Also, the phenomenon is closely tied to e-mail, which itself has presented major challenges to professionals in time management and keeping an appropriate focus in their work and life.

The most obvious issue about social media: Is this a useful way to spend your time, or is it a sinkhole of attractive distraction? It could very easily be one of those one minute, and the other the next! It all depends on why you’re doing it, and this must be evaluated moment to moment. It’s an important distinction to make for yourself, because focus is probably your greatest asset that you can control. You must be judicious about where you place it and what you let grab it, thus reducing your effectiveness.

NEW ORLEANS — Carat CEO Sarah Fay said marketing efforts that employ social-media sites are more effective when used as part of a wider campaign and not as a solo initiative.

“You have to look at it as woven into the overall fabric of the program and not as something that stands on its own,” she said on a panel at the 4As media conference

As an example, Fay pointed to a McDonald’s push last year–mentioned first by a MySpace executive–celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Big Mac. The fast-food company wanted to capitalize on nostalgia for the burger’s memorable jingle to improve sales. So it used social-networking site MySpace as well as traditional media for the campaign.
